Optimization of Toll System in El Cairo-Alexandria motorway
Analysis and optimization of the toll system of the Cairo-Alexandria highway (Desert Road) in Egypt.

After the estimation of traffic in the base year and the projection of the corridor future traffic, a new road was simulated using a split model between the free alternative and the new highway with the toll rates provided by the Administration.

Apart from analyzing the open toll system (with tolls at the trunk road) or closed toll system (with toll plazas at entry and exit gates) alternatives, different modes of payment were analyzed: cash and credit card, STC (Single Transporter Lanes) and ORT (Open Road Toll) lanes.

The rate of penetration of electronic payment systems (ETC) was also estimated and finally a cost-benefit model was developed for each case.
