Torrelodones, a town of Madrid regional area has received the 2013 Walking City Award, in the category “municipalities between 20.000 and 100.000 inhabitants”.
The Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan carried out by Diadro during 2011-2012 gathered the proposals to improve the mobility of the entire municipality.
Public participation was a key factor in order to prioritize and undertake strategic but low budget works.
Among the most successful actions proposed in the Plan, there was a project of Safe Routes to School, conducted by Gea21 during 2012-2013, and the pedestrianization of the city center through a design competition open to all architects.
All these actions to favor pedestrians and the efforts of its citizens have made Torrelodones the award-winning “Walking City”.
